Embracing Generosity: Highlights from Global Be Well Day at Hastings School
On September 27, 2024, Hastings School celebrated Global Be Well Day, a day dedicated to promoting well-being through acts of kindness and generosity. This year’s theme, focused on the concept of “Giving,” brought together students and staff in a heartwarming display of community spirit and compassion.
We at Hastings School are delighted to join our Cognita family in celebrating Global Be Well Day year after year. As part of this extraordinary community of diverse yet interconnected schools across sixteen countries, we take pride in supporting the well-being of over 90,000 students worldwide.
In the Early Years and Primary, children participated in a variety of activities that celebrated kindness, including making cards and bookmarks for younger classes, sharing songs, and expressing gratitude. The joyful sounds of children singing together filled the hallways, a true testament to the uplifting power of giving.
As we reflect on Global Be Well Day, we encourage everyone in the Hastings School community to continue embracing the spirit of kindness and generosity. Let us carry these lessons into our daily lives and recognise the profound impact that even the smallest gestures can have.
Together, we can foster a culture of giving that uplifts us all and creates a positive environment for everyone. Here’s to a year filled with kindness, empathy, and the joy of giving!
For our secondary students the day began with a student-led assembly that not only educated but inspired. Attendees learned about the positive effects of generosity on our brain and overall well-being. As Mr. Jonathan Coward from Cognita shared insights on the psychology of giving, students reflected on how simple acts of kindness can foster a sense of belonging and happiness.
“I felt really happy exchanging messages with my classmates,” said one student. “It’s nice to know that even small gestures can make someone’s day brighter.”
A highlight of the day was the exchanging of paper fortune cookies filled with messages of support and encouragement. Students took turns sharing these thoughtful notes on the LST patio, creating a ripple effect of positivity. Messages like “You are enough” and “Kindness matters” resonated deeply, reinforcing the importance of looking out for one another.
Throughout the day, students engaged in various acts of kindness, from helping teachers with tasks to complimenting peers. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of purpose, as everyone embraced the spirit of giving.
Global Be Well Day is not just a one-off event; it serves as a launchpad for ongoing initiatives focused on well-being and kindness. The lessons learned will continue to shape the school culture as students are encouraged to carry forward the spirit of giving throughout the year.
As we look ahead, various activities are planned to sustain this momentum, ensuring that kindness remains at the forefront of our community values.
Reflections on Well-Being
The concept of well-being is intrinsically linked to the act of giving. Research shows that engaging in acts of kindness can lead to improved mental health and a greater sense of fulfilment. Mr. Coward reminded us that “Giving enriches our lives, supports personal growth, and has a profound impact on those around us.”
We are particularly proud of the individual initiatives that emerged during the celebration. One notable example is Nico, a student who generously donated his outgrown clothes to charity. His actions exemplify how giving extends beyond the school and into the wider community.
